Description
The algae collection of the Herbarium BCN contains more than 7,000 specimens. These samples correspond to marine macrophytes, basically phaeophytes, rhodophytes and chlorophytes, which come from all along the coastline of the Iberian Peninsula, but mostly from the Catalan-speaking territories (Països Catalans), the Basque Country and Galicia. In terms of taxa, there is a substantial representation of the genus Cystoseira. more
The pressed samples are placed in herbarium boxes, classifyed by division and in every division, the species are sorted alfabetically. They are marine macrophyta, mainly Phaeophyta, Rhodophyta and Chlorophyta. They have been collected all along the Iberic Peninsula coast, but mostly in the Catalan Countries, Basque Country and Galicia. There is a significant presence of the genus Cystoseira. The jars with formol contain basically microscopic freshwater algae. The samples are usyally plurispecific, with one predominant taxon. They are not for loan and may only be studied at the center. The curator of this documentation unit is Dr. Antonia Ribera, professor at the Natural Products, Vegetal Biology and Edaphology Department from the University of Barcelona. The pessed samples collection is totally computerized and available through the data base section.
